Cybersecurity requirements are looming for manufacturers with
U.S. Dept. of Defense (DoD) contracts  – Are You Ready?

By December 31, 2017, manufacturers holding contracts with DoD and process Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) must be compliant with defined cybersecurity requirements or they risk losing their business contracts.  CUI is provided to the contractor by or on behalf of DoD and can include controlled technical information, critical information (operations security), export control and other information marked or otherwise identified in the contract that requires safeguarding.

Alarmingly, it appears that large numbers of small and medium-size manufacturers across the nation and in Vermont who hold government contracts with DoD may not be fully aware of this fast approaching year-end deadline and/or do not know what they must do to prepare and comply.

In an effort to educate and assist impacted companies, the Vermont Procurement Technical Assistance Center (VT PTAC) and VMEC have joined efforts to help Vermont companies understand the 14 areas with specific security requirements that must be implemented before December 31, as documented in NIST Special Publication 800-171.

Co-Sponsored by the VT PTAC and VMEC, a special educational event, Cybersecurity Compliance for Vermont  DoD, GSA and NASA Contractors,  will be led by Pat Toth, MEP Cybersecurity Program Manager, National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST). Pat will be among the invited guest speakers presenting and answering questions. Pat was actively involved in establishing the cybersecurity guidance described in NIST Special Publication 800-171 and co-authored NISTIR 7621 “Small Business Information Security: The Fundamentals”.
